Kindergarten
Kindergarten is the first time that some students will leave the direct care of parents and move into a social world outside the direct home environment. We understand the immense privilege and responsibility this is. We have purposely limited the Kindergarten to two full days a week contact time, as we believe that children at this age should still be spending the majority of their time in their home environment.
At Strathalbyn Christian College we believe that "play is the work of children" (Friedrich Froebel). It is our aim in Kindergarten to provide a learning environment which facilitates learning through play. We encourage parents to be highly involved in the play of their children to help develop their skills.
Our Kindy Centre is set up to:
- cater to the children's needs as they arise
- keep activities and equipment flexible
- keep the tone, outlook, atmosphere and expectations realistic
- ensure long term objectives and expectations do not replace the emphasis on relationships and language development
- keep the amount of activities and amount of equipment in perspective so that the atmosphere is informal and relaxed.
Our goals for Kindergarten are:
- for student to know that this is their school and for them to feel safe, comfortable and confident in our College
- for students to know how to interact with a teacher. To be respectful, to be able to receive correction and encouragement and to see the teacher as a mentor and guide
- for students to ask questions and know they can receive answers
- for students to interact with each other in a Christ-like manner (learning to share, include, forgive and serve others)
- for students to be interested in this amazing world
- for students to believe they are champions and to discover new roles
- to make decisions and problem solve
- to develop their imagination.
